On Friday, it was announced that President-elect Donald Trump has chosen U.S. Representative Mike Pompeo of Kansas’s fourth congressional district to be the new leader of the Central Intelligence Agency. In a statement released by Pompeo, he said he was honored for the opportunity to serve as the leader of the CIA and to work alongside Trump in order to keep the United States safe.
Pompeo previously founded an aerospace company that went on to be successful. In 2010, he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives after the Republicans beat out the Democrats who had held the majority in Congress at the time. Pompeo has been particularly critical of the Obama administration for the nuclear deal that was made with Iran.
This makes Pompeo the perfect person for Donald Trump to align himself with because Trump was critical of the Iranian nuclear deal during the course of his presidential campaign. He constantly called it one of the worst deals he’s ever seen. Pompeo and Trump were also critical of Obama for paying Iran $400 million in cash, which they considered to be a ransom payment for the return of the U.S. hostages that Iran was holding.
Pompeo has also supported the National Security Agency’s domestic surveillance programs. In 2013, some of these same programs were revealed by Edward Snowden, who was an NSA whistleblower. Pompeo believes the surveillance programs are both constitutional and lawful because it helps the U.S. government in their fight against radical Islamic terrorism.
As for the CIA, Pompeo has been a supporter of the special interrogation techniques used by the agency. In case you don’t know, these special techniques are when agents “torture” the suspects. In a radio interview from 2014 with Hugh Hewitt, Pompeo said the CIA’s enhanced interrogation program was what helped locate and bring down Osama bin Laden.
With Trump talking tough on destroying ISIS, it looks like he picked the perfect person for leading the CIA in defeating the terrorist threats which still face the United States and the rest of the civilized world.
