On Thursday night, Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence was in a plane landing in New York’s LaGuardia Airport when it suddenly skidded right off the runway and onto the grass. The plane not only included Pence, but also reporters and other members of the press were in the back of the plane. Fortunately, nobody on board was injured.
After the plane made a complete stop, Pence went to the back to talk with the reporters and make sure they were okay. He also spoke with the emergency responders as well. According to Pence’s spokesman, Pence went right to his hotel instead of making his scheduled appearance at a fundraiser in Trump Tower.
Donald Trump campaign spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said Pence was contacted by Trump shortly after the rough landing. He expressed how happy he was that everyone was safe on the plane. On Friday, Pence is scheduled to attend a rally in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. The Trump campaign said he will continue to go to these rallies as originally planned.
Pence sent a tweet after the incident which stated the following: “So thankful everyone on our plane is safe. Grateful for our first responders & the concern & prayers of so many. Back on the trail tomorrow!”
Rescue crews investigated the scene at the airport and found the runway had some damage to it but the plane itself was fine. It was also raining a lot outside while the landing took place. Some experts speculate that it may have been hard for the landing gears of the plane to maintain good traction on the slippery runway.
CNN was told by a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson that they are investigating the incident to learn the exact cause of why the plane went off the runway.
